Lantern · by Forest Integrations

Know what you agreed to, in plain language.

Lantern is the app for digital dignity. It explains what's in the apps on your phone: who collects your data, what happens to it, what rights you have, and how to act on them, with calm, sourced guidance at the moment it matters.

Coming soon  Windows and macOS first, with the mobile app to follow.

What it does

Reads the fine print so you don't have to, then helps you act.

Per-app summaries

Every app gets the same eight-section summary: what it collects, who it shares with, how long it keeps things, your rights, and more. Four grades, privacy, security, transparency and incident response, each with its reasons and sources.

How they treat you when it goes wrong

Every company has incidents. Lantern grades how each one responded: owned it or deflected, told customers plainly or buried it, and what changed afterwards. A clear, honest policy scores higher than a vague one, even when both collect data.

Plain-language explainers

What a permission really allows, what "we may share with partners" means, how to read a privacy label. Written at a reading level anyone can follow, with the sources in the footer.

One-tap rights actions

A deletion-request generator writes the email for your state and the app in front of you. Export and opt-out requests follow the same path.

Your apps, found for you

On Windows and macOS, Lantern reads the apps installed on your computer and lets you add the ones on your phone, then shows each one's summary. The mobile app, coming next, brings a summary when a new app lands and a permission checklist.

A library to start from

Nearly a hundred apps already rated on privacy and security at launch, and the library grows as the engine runs and a person approves each record.

How it's built

Sourced, graded by written rules, approved by a person.

  • A grading engine with written rules scores each app on four dimensions: privacy, security, transparency and incident response. Every record carries its sources.
  • Records are researched, then checked adversarially, then reviewed by an editor before they publish. Nothing goes out without a person approving it.
  • The engine grades its own dependencies the same way, so Lantern holds itself to the standard it holds others to.
  • First: Windows and macOS, with the app library, the explainers and the deletion-request tool. Then the mobile app with the same library. Phones don't let an app see what else is installed without explicit permission, so the mobile version leans on search and the built-in list.
  • Built on the same foundation as our other apps: identities in place of secrets, telemetry off, every dependency audited.
